Weird News: WikiLeaks T-shirt Winners!

As I posted two weeks ago (view here) , WikiLeaks (yes, the real WikiLeaks) launched their own t-shirt design contest here with 99designs and what a response the contest received!!
With just shy of 1,000 designer concepts in well under two weeks, we were blown away with the enthusiasm of the design community in getting behind the contest and creating some truly awesome t-shirt graphics. To all our designers that participated, we would like to say thank you and let you know that you all did an amazing job in creating some fantastic design submissions for the guys over at WikiLeaks – they were truly stumped when it came to choosing from almost 1,000 great designs!
In fact, after talking with some of the guys at WikiLeaks, it was clear that they could never choose one winner… so instead they chose three!

1st Winner – Maffsf

“Opening Governments Tee”
With a stylish entry using the original WikiLeaks logo in a slightly different look, Maffsf got to take out first honors with this entry gaining over 1,000 votes in the public poll for a great t-shirt! Awesome work!

2nd Winner – Emceelp

“Got Truth Tee”
With simple colors and a minimalist theme, Emceelp has moved away from the WikiLeaks logo and thought up something  little bit different. Congratulations Emceelp!

3rd Winner - Maffsf

“Top Secret Tee”
With great use of typography and a busy look, the wrap around of the Top Secret Tee came in third as the staff favourite over at WikiLeaks. Congratulations again Maffsf!

To Emceelp and Maffsf, we would like to extend our thanks and praise for some great pieces of t-shirt art: they will look fantastic in your folios!

15 UI Design Patterns Web Designers Should Keep Handy
User interface design patterns help create consistency throughout the web, and provide a great resource for web designers looking for the best tested, most usable, and most efficient layouts. Many things in life are in a pattern, and this includes applications in both design and development. Whilst creativity and thinking outside the box is a must in design, so is conformity much of the time. UI patterns in web design are gaining recognition as an important resource to consider, and creating designs around them can help any website be more user-friendly. read more

Weird GOOGLE today: Yuri Gagarin

Yuri Alekseyevich Gagarin (Russian: Ю́рий Алексе́евич Гага́рин,[1] Russian pronunciation: [ˈjurʲɪj ɐlʲɪˈksʲeɪvʲɪtɕ ɡɐˈɡarʲɪn]; 9 March 1934 – 27 March 1968) was a Soviet pilot and cosmonaut. He was the first human to journey into outer space when his Vostok spacecraft completed an orbit of the Earth on April 12, 1961.
Gagarin became an international celebrity, and was awarded many medals and honours, including Hero of the Soviet Union. Vostok 1 marked his only spaceflight, but he served as backup to theSoyuz 1 mission (which ended in a fatal crash). Gagarin later became deputy training director of the Cosmonaut Training Centre outside Moscow, which was later named after him. Gagarin died in 1968 when a Mig 15 training jet he was piloting crashed. contunue

The Weird Power of Negative Space on Design Logo

The logo designer’s job is, amongst other things, to create attractive eye-catching logos. This is achieved using a variety of design elements and concepts. Some designers have a wonderful skill for using negative space to create clever and memorable logos. Often the negative space part of the logo may initially appear to be hidden but on closer inspection will reveal an icon or message. Once noticed, the formerly hidden element then becomes the most obvious part of the logo design, raising a smile or nod of acknowledgement. Negative space gives the viewer’s eye a place to rest.

What Exactly Is Negative Space?

Negative space is the empty space around and between the subject of an image. For example, in a two-tone black-and-white image, a subject is normally depicted in black and the space around it is left blank (white), creating a silhouette. If you reverse the colors so that the space around the subject is black and the subject itself is left blank, the negative space forms a shape around the subject. Negative space can be used to depict a subject in a chosen medium by showing everything around the subject but not the subject itself.
A well documented example of negative space in logo design is the hidden arrow between the letters E and X in the FedEx logo.

How To Use Negative Space In Logo Design

Looking at the work of Noma Bar, I think you’ll agree it’s not as simple as it looks. As with any type of logo design, sketching and experimentation are imperative.
Here’s some tips to consider when creating a logo with negative space as a major design element.
  • Simple is best. Keep the icon or symbol simple so as to avoid confusing the viewer. Remember the trick in the FedEx logo is a simple hidden arrow.
  • The negative space does not have to be white (or black).
  • If the logo consists mainly of text, try adding a shape behind the text and reversing the colors.
  • Placing two symmetrical shapes in close proximity can produce a full image in the negative space in-between.
And now for your viewing pleasure, here’s a small collection of logos which are using the negative space in a clever and artistic fashion to create visually appealing logos.
